Music education has been a part of Luiseño since it opened in 1991. All kindergarten through fifth grade students are actively involved in making their own music using the Orff Schulwerk philosophies. Based on the teachings of Carl Orff, the German composer, children are involved in every aspect of music: singing, chanting, playing instruments, movement, and dancing. Music notation begins in first grade. In addition to their regular music classes, Luiseño fourth graders learn to play handbells and qualify to audition for the Luiseño Handbell Choir, a performance-based outreach group. One
half hour per week of music instruction costs about
$40 per student per year, and there are several ways
Luiseño families support this.
We
have recently begun our tile wall that reflects staff
and family sponsorships of $40 for each colorfully painted
tile. Parents also contribute by supporting business
partnership donations such as the Target Visa card, Escrip,
Washington Mutual’s Wamoola program and
Albertson’s Preferred Card membership.
Carl’s
Junior and Barnes and Noble nights generate fun for the
family as well as revenue toward music classes. In
addition, Luiseño parents with businesses can
purchase advertising in our monthly newsletter.
